The first CWC Drag Racing Day took place at York Raceway
on Monday 28th August 2006. A convoy of about 20 cars headed over from Cumbria
on Sunday afternoon to camp at the strip, and were joined by several more on
Monday morning. As soon as we arrived the tents went up, the barbies were lit
and the drink started flowing. It's a good job we got there early because as
soon as it got dark it started to pour with rain. A couple of tents were
flooded, but it did nothing to dampen our enthusiasm.
The next morning the hangovers were quickly forgotten as a few cars
needed last minute tweaking and repairs before they could race. While some stripped out back seats
and spare tyres to make the cars lighter and gain a few vital thousandths of a
second, others warmed their nitrous bottles in the morning sunshine and warmed
their engines and gearboxes with a few laps. A missing oil filler cap, a sump
oil leak and a loose drive shaft were among the repairs needed, and compulsory
scrutineering revealed a few loose bits that needed to be tightened down. It's a
good job there were plenty of helpers on hand with the right tools for the job.
The
track was quickly dried off, so racing could start without delay. A few showers
during the day put a temporary stop to things, but they soon passed and the
track was dried off again so racing could resume. With the track access roads
still wet and muddy, it was vital to do a good burnout on the line to clean and
dry your tyres for maximum traction. It's not easy to do this in a 4wd car or a
2wd with a slip diff, so most peoples 1/4 mile times are probably a few tenths
longer than they would be on a dry day.
At the
end of the day the remaining 8 CWC cars went head to head in the CWC shootout.
Unfortunately rain meant that only one run could be made, so the trophy was
awarded to the car with the quickest ET.
