With Donny moving south this year it was looking like the whole north of England would be without a major modified car show. Then Cruise Fest North West was announced, and the gap was filled. Building on the success of the Cumbrian Car Show in Workington last year, CFNW promised to be bigger and better. The usual blend of clubs, stages and trade stands were joined this year by the Car Catwalk and an Action Arena, where Russ Swift, and the Pyromaniac on a jet quad bike kept the crowds entertained.

Things got off to a bit of a shaky start, as the local residents around Carlisle Racecourse, where the event was held, were more used to seeing cars loaded with cucumber sandwiches and champagne, so when the modified masses turned up on the Friday night with booming ICE and thundering exhausts, the complaints began to roll in. An over-zealous racecourse safety officer seemed determined to spoil the fun too, but after a few compromises with the bikini car wash and the competitions, things went ahead pretty much as planned. The flame out competition had to be cancelled, so this will be held at the next CWC cruise, where health and safety officers fear to tread!

In the end, apart from some lacklustre security, the event went well. The turnout was better than last year which is a good indication that the show could grow and grow to rival well established events like Donny and the Modified Nationals in the future. You could tell by the mix of sweat, sun cream, burnt tyre rubber and diesel from the jet quad on everyone's faces that the action arena was a big hit. The Car Catwalk was popular too; when it wasn't hosting the Grass Roots Challenge, there were dancers, girls, freebies and even the England match on show.

The after show party on the Saturday night took a bit to get going, but the arrival of the Fuel Girls livened things up. Large amounts of ale were drunk, and it was satisfying to know you were still 'up north' when you got your change back!

The scorching weather caught a few people out, with sunburn being as common as hangovers on the Sunday. Thanks to everyone who helped out in the lead up to the event and on the day, there are too many names to list here, but you guys and girls know who you are. Without the blood, sweat and tears (in some cases literally) that CWC members contributed, the show would never have gone ahead.
