CWC5 kicked off a little too early, with an overenthusiastic shopper hand breaking it out of Safeway’s car park. The resulting complaint meant that we had to be extra careful when the cruise began, as the Police had agreed to stay out of the car park if everyone behaved themselves.

The cruisers didn’t disappoint, word of mouth soon spread with the help of a few flyers. Although everyone wanted to see some action, most people agreed that it was in the interests of CWC to tone it down a bit. Watch the website for news though, as CWC may be having a full on burn out hand breaking fest at a private location for a future cruise, if everything goes according to plan.

The cruise atmosphere was the most friendly it has ever been. With the Police making it clear what their position would be weeks before the cruise, everyone could relax and enjoy the night. The warm weather helped to get everyone out of their cars and with a few quality boot installs keeping everyone entertained, there was a real party feeling in the air.

Once again the turnout was awesome. The CWC regulars seemed to be in the minority, as many cars had turned up from much further away. The word about CWC cruises is getting out to all parts of the car community, and with cars like TVR’s and Ferraris turning up, this can only be a good thing. As always there were some very well turned out cars, and it was good to see the progress that has been made in modding cars that have turned up to CWC cruises in the past. If only there was enough web space for a photo of every one of them. With this sort of turn out we are almost certainly guaranteed a magazine shoot at a forthcoming cruise. Watch the forum for more updates.

The Police response to the event was measured and proportionate, in stark contrast to how cruises are often dealt with in other parts of the country. The Cumbria Constabulary has earned the respect of much of the Cumbrian cruising community, by demonstrating to the public that the law is being enforced, but at the same time not victimising cruisers. The checkpoint in MAFF car park stopped a number of cars and issued prohibition notices. 7 drivers were stopped for illegally tinted windows, 1 car had defective breaks, and 1 driver was stopped for mobile phone use while driving. This is significantly less than at previous cruises, which is much appreciated by the Police and goes a long way towards improving the public’s opinion of CWC cruises.

The last cars left just after midnight, with only the ‘Cruise Wombles’ staying back to clear up the litter. Roll on CWC6………
