Cruise West Cumbria
hit the headlines again in the week before CWC6. This time however the press
had talked to the organisers and cruisers who make it all happen, so the reports
were unbiased accounts rather than the usual re-hashed rubbish about boy racers.
The added publicity ensured a stunning turn out on the day, with at least a
thousand people and 400+ cars.
It was really
nice to see families with children in pushchairs, knowing they felt welcome and
comfortable being there. People came from as far away as the Midlands, North
East, Scotland, Lancaster and of course from all over Cumbria. All the comments
and feedback received so far has been positive, everyone enjoyed the event
and there have been no complaints. Good policing from the Cumbria Constabulary
ensured that no one misbehaved, and no one felt that the Police were there to
threaten the event. There was one uneasy moment when a Police van parked right
in the middle of the cruise venue, but when the two officers got out and began
light heartedly chatting to the cruisers, everyone relaxed. This is exactly the
sort of community policing that helps to break down the barriers between
cruisers and the Police.
Both the News
and Star and BBC Radio Cumbria
attended. There was almost a paparazzi jostle for the best pictures. A number of
cruisers were interviewed and they managed to perfectly capture the spirit of
the cruise. The resulting press and radio reports can only help to make CWC
bigger and better than it already is.
Once again
there were some breathtaking cars in attendance, and some remarkable changes to
some of the regular cars considering the last cruise was only six weeks ago.
There were a great mix of vehicles from all marques and in various stages of
modification. Something for everyone. We also had two Ferraris, a Jaguar XJ220 and a Corvette
cruise through at various points during the evening, you could almost feel the
ground shake as everyone's jaws dropped. As always the boot installs kept people
entertained well into the night, and when the sun set the neons were switched on
in for a dazzling light show.
Notices were hung around the car park and
leaflets were distributed at the beginning of the night asking people not to
mess about, but everyone seemed to know the score anyway, and the whole evening
passed peacefully.
The ranks of
the Cruise Wombles were swelled to 13 at the end of the night, and in five
minutes flat the car park looked cleaner than it had when we arrived. We look
forward to CWC7 and we hope more of the general public will feel free to attend
and enjoy our events in the future, their presence is very welcome.
