There are a lot of modded cars with tuned up engines, quite a few with custom body kits, and plenty with full on installs.  Every now and again all three come together to make a genuine show car, like this Mitsubishi Colt built by Robb from Bowness, aka dougie175 on our forum. He took a plane uninspiring Mitsubishi Colt 1.3 Maui, added a shed load of Mutant audio gear, a tuned up Cyborg engine and a hell of a lot of fibre glass; the Mutant Maui was born.

The hand crafted skirts and arch vents were inspired by a kit seen on a Supra. Colour coded door handles and side repeaters hidden in the M6 style mirrors help smooth out the lines on the side of the car.

The roof bars and A pillar gutters have been smoothed out to tidy up the top of the car. Most of the bodywork on the car was custom built by Robb at McDougalls garage in Bowness.

One of the few off the shelf body panels on the car is the Erebuni style front bumper.

The bonnet has been cut, fibre glassed and smoothed to produce a unique bonnet vent.

Smoothed module tail lights, smoothed rear quarters and a one off rear bumper finish off the back of the car.

Under the bonnet, the 1.3 lump has been replaced by a Mitsubishi Colt Cyborg 1.6 Mivec. This is not an easy feat when Mitsubishi UK don't have a wiring diagram for this engine, and it isn't supported by their engine diagnostics computer. The whole dash had to be removed to fit a new wiring loom, but after 3 days of head scratching and a bit of help from a mate, the 1598cc, 4 cylinder, 16v Mivec engine was wired in.  Engine power is helped by the Green Stuff Powerflow induction kit, custom de-cat pipe, alloy fly wheel and a Dastek chip and remap. The chip was particularly important as the automatic gearbox that came with the Cyborg engine was replaced with a 5 speed manual. The engine now puts out 142 bhp at the wheels (estimated 170 bhp at the flywheel). A colour coded engine cover, a silicone hose kit and blue wiring covers help keep everything tidy under the bonnet.

The power is put down by 17" KEI Alloys, re -sprayed in Mirrar Chrome. These are tucked up inside the custom built arches on 205/40/R17 Toyo Proxies. The front brakes have been replaced by AP Racing 4 pot callipers while the rears remain standard

The engine exhausts through a purpose built twin exit stainless steel tailpipes. The whole car has been lowered 40mm on Spax Springs.

At the back, the spoiler is one originally intended to fit a Civic, but it has been substantially re-shaped and smoothed to fit the Colt.

One of the only things left standard on the car are the  headlights, but you wouldn't notice unless someone pointed them out to you.

Inside the car, the 'grandad' interior has been replaced with Cobra Monaco bucket seats and a colour coded fiberglass dash and dials. A pod full of gauges lets the driver know the current and voltage available for the massive ICE install. The centre dash has been modified to fit the mp3 head unit.

The steering wheel is a Momo Avion with a custom built mount to make it fit the Colt. A set of alloy colour coded pedals and an alloy gear knob and tax disc holder maintain the theme inside the car. Harness pads, sports floor mats blue neon interior lights add the finishing touches.

Fibre glassed colour coded door cards containing a set of Mutant components complete the interior re-trim.

The rear seats have been removed to house the ICE install. Along each side a pair of Mutant X Subwoofers, Mutant 6 x 9's and Mutant 6.5" speakers are lined up.

Down the middle a Mutant 2 x 80 watt amp, a Mutant 4 x 80 watt amp and a Mutant 800 watt mono amp power the install. A Creative Zen 20gb touch screen  mp3 head unit drives the whole system.

The custom built fibreglass boot install has been airbrushed with lightening and is fitted with motion activated neons to show it off in the darkness of a cruise.

The car didn't always look like this, as seen here at CWC11 in Kendal. The car has since had the roof vent and  and graphics removed and has had a complete re-spray in blue and silver.

The install looked a bit different back then too, the lightening and Mutant 'M' has since been added.

The car has already had a feature in Fast and Modified, and given the crowds it pulls in at cruises it is likely to grace the pages of other mags over the coming months. So what's next? Well the car has been sold since these pictures were taken, so anything could happen. Robb now has an Integra Type-R, so expect more good things to come out of Bowness in the future, only this time they will be going a bit faster.
